10 Questions to Ask Before Nikah (And Why Each One Matters)
The meetings before a nikah are short, and the marriage that follows is meant to last a lifetime. Yet most of us walk into those conversations unprepared, ask surface level questions, and only discover what really matters after the contract is signed.
Asking better questions is the single cheapest way to protect your future marriage. Below are ten of the most important — and for each one, what to listen for. Don't ask them all in one sitting: two or three per conversation is plenty, and answer each one yourself too.
1. What does your relationship with Allah look like day to day, beyond the obligatory acts?
Listen for honesty and consistency, not perfection. Someone who can speak plainly about where their deen is strong and where it struggles will bring that same honesty into marriage. Someone performing religiosity for the meeting will perform it for your family too, until they stop.
2. What role do you expect your parents to play in our marriage?
Vague answers here become painful surprises later. You are marrying into a family dynamic, not just a person. Living arrangements, visiting expectations and decision-making all hide inside this question.
3. How would you handle a disagreement between me and your mother?
The answer reveals whether they can hold healthy boundaries with love, or whether you will always come second. "That would never happen" is not an answer, it's an avoidance.
4. Do you have any debts and what is the plan for them?
Evasiveness is a bigger red flag than the debt itself. A modest income with a clear plan beats a good salary with hidden liabilities every time.
5. What did the division of responsibilities look like in your parents' home and do you want the same?
Most people silently expect to replicate their childhood home. If your two blueprints don't match, better to discover it now than in month three.
6. Do you expect your spouse to work? Would that change after children?
Assumptions on this question end marriages. Get the expectation and its ten year version before the nikah, not after.
7. What does an argument look like for you, do you go quiet, raise your voice, need space?
You are not looking for someone who never argues. You are looking for someone who argues safely. How disagreements were handled in their childhood home is usually the preview.
8. When you were last wrong about something important, how did you apologise?
Ask for a real example. The inability to ever say "I was wrong" predicts marital misery better than almost anything else you can observe in the talking stage.
9. Is there anything in your past a future spouse deserves to know?
You're not entitled to every detail of a person's history — but how they handle this question, with honesty, deflection or anger, tells you exactly how truth will be handled in your home.
10. Why marriage and why now?
Loneliness, family pressure and ticking timelines make poor foundations. Listen for a reason that will still hold in year ten.
These ten are a starting point, not the whole conversation
Ten questions will show you the shape of a person. They won't cover everything that needs to be said before a nikah: the sensitive topics, the money detail, the in-law specifics, the parenting expectations.
